SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm

Almost to the hour after Friedrich der Große’s end, Kronprinz Wilhelm joined her.

To scuttle a ship, as much water as can be properly managed is let into the hull. The obvious inlets are the main seawater pumps, which bring seawater into the ship for many different tasks: cooling engines, providing water for fire management or trimming the ship, always making sure that weight is evenly distributed to keep her decks level. Other ways to bring water into the ship include opening up outlets that are only used in combat, including torpedo tubes. Apertures such as portholes, normally way above the water line, only become useful during the later stages to add more volume. When scuttling, the Germans thought that rolling their ships would make it more difficult for later salvage operations. Hence, water was purposefully pumped to one side to create a list that eventually would roll the ship over on to her back.
